It used to be the Crown Land on the border of Carpathian Foothills and the Sandomierz Basin, abounding in large wild game, honey, timber and animal skins. The ancient settlement of Svincza, the inhabitants of which earned their living from amber processing and trading with the Romans, was located on the migration route of the people looking for settlements. In the Middle Ages, the town was situated on a trade route from Lesser Poland to Rus, which Polish dukes and Russian princes used for their military expeditions.
